So was that really Anakin Skywalker at the end of Ahsoka? Read more to find out.
Is Anakin Skywalker in Ahsoka?
Is Anakin Skywalker in Ahsoka? Yes! That was a beloved reunion between Snips and her master. At the last moments of the episode, it’s assumed that Ahsoka is actually in the World Between Worlds. The place was previously seen in Star Wars Rebels when Ahsoka and Ezra Bridger walk through it and they encounter different moments in the Star Wars timeline.
As Ahsoka awakes from her fall, she hears a familiar voice. “Hello Snips,” the voice says. As any Star Wars aficionado knows, this is the affectionate nickname Anakin gave to his former Padawan. “I didn’t expect to see you so soon,” he continues. Ahsoka turns around and sees her old master, in his prime (probably around the Clone Wars, but between Episode II and Episode II). “Anakin,” Ahsoka gasps in disbelief and we see a closeup of the Jedi-turned-Darth Vader. The scene cuts to black with Vader’s theme playing as the credits roll.
Many fans took to social media to express their excitement. “I’m happy to live in the era where Hayden Christensen finally receives the love he has always deserved for his role as Anakin Skywalker,” one user posted on X (formerly known as Twitter). Another posted, “during the sequels everything about anakin was almost gone, it felt amazing to see him back now in ahsoka, especially of course hayden christensen representing again. we needed this so bad! CRYING MY EYES OUT.”
Hayden Christensen returned to the role of Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi. It was announced that he would be reprising his beloved character in Ahsoka in October 2021 via The Hollywood Reporter.
On if he was stoked to be playing Anakin again, he told The Guardian, “It just seemed like a really exciting opportunity. It was a no-brainer. In a heartbeat. When I got the call, I was instantly elated … I was just so excited to get to come back after all these years.” If he was afraid of the backlash in the present, “Noooooo, never! Do you think that’s a possibility?” he says. “I mean, it’s all on the table, but you know, that doesn’t get factored into these types of decisions for me.”
He talked about how he landed the role. “I was a big admirer of George Lucas’s,” says Christensen. “Even outside of his work on Star Wars.” His parents had bought him The Creative Impulse, a book about Lucas and his cultural influence. “I was just enamoured by it all. I was just excited to get to go and meet George Lucas. I think that was probably working in my favour, at the time, because I wasn’t really taking it too seriously.”
He reflected further, “I was less than a year out of high school, and I found myself on this big movie production with George Lucas and Ewan McGregor and Natalie Portman and all these incredibly talented people … really, I couldn’t have dreamed it up any better. I’m so grateful that I got to be a part of that.”
“I think that’s a very powerful concept,” he says. “And one that really resonates within the Star Wars storytelling as well.”
Obi-Wan Kenobi marked the first time that Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor reunited in nearly 20 years. “Just seeing him again as Obi-Wan was such a thrilling sight,” Christensen gushed to Entertainment Weekly. “We got together a little before we started filming, just to catch up, but seeing him again as this character was mind-blowing.”
“The atmosphere on set was really electric that day,” McGregor recalled. “I came on set, and I’d been shooting for a little while before Hayden started. I couldn’t believe how many people were there. I was looking around, going, ‘There’s so many people on set today!’ I couldn’t figure out what was going on. And then the penny clicked when [he] walked out in the suit, and I was like, ‘Oh yeah, everyone’s here to see Hayden as Vader.’”
Ahsoka is available to stream on Disney+. New episodes come out on Wednesday. Here’s how to watch it and the rest of the Star Wars movies for free.
